The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) aims to develop students who have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge – students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically. The DP is for students aged 16-19.
DP students are better able than their peers to cope with demanding workloads, manage their time and meet the expectations placed on them. They are offered at least two languages to study and the excel in traditional academic subjects.
The Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum is made up of six subject groups and the DP core, comprising theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS) and the extended essay.
Through the Diploma Programme (DP) core, students reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete independent research and undertake a project that often involves community service.
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) assesses student work as direct evidence of achievement against the stated goals of the Diploma Programme (DP) courses. DP assessment procedures measure the extent to which students have mastered advanced academic skills in fulfilling these goals, by analysing and presenting information, evaluating and constructing arguments and solving problems creatively. Basic skills like retaining knowledge, understanding key concepts and applying standard methods are also assessed.
External assessment of students (examinations) include, essays, structured problems, short-response questions, data-response questions, text-response questions, case-study questions and sometimes multiple-choice questions.
Internal assessment, on the other hand, is done by the teacher which includes oral work in languages, fieldwork in geography, laboratory work in the sciences, investigations in mathematics and artistic performances.
The DP is an academically challenging and balanced programme of education. It addresses the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of students, and is respected by universities across the globe.
Each of the IB’s programmes, including the DP, is committed to the development of students according to the attributes shown in the IB learner profile. Read about the IB learner profile here.
